About

A signal buried in noise is not missing.

It is unreadable, which is a different problem, and a solvable one. Everything needed to recover it is already there. What defeats you is everything else arriving at the same moment. Specialized software does this to people, usually by accident.

01 · The problem

Where the difficulty lives

Open almost any professional tool and the capability is right there. So is the manual, the settings panel, the export dialog asking questions you have never had to answer, and a vocabulary you were expected to pick up somewhere else. None of that is the work, and all of it stands in front of the work.

A job that takes a trained person four minutes costs everyone else an afternoon, a subscription, or a favor from someone who already knows how. More often it does not get done at all, and that never shows up anywhere as a failure of the software.

02 · What we do about it

The expertise moves into the product

DeepSignal designs, builds, and operates a portfolio of web applications. Each one starts from a job that is genuinely useful and genuinely gated. It is finished when someone who has never seen it gets a usable result on the first try. That last part is the expensive one, and it is where most of the work goes.

The expertise does not disappear. It changes address. Somebody still has to know about color profiles and codecs, and the way a document falls apart when you change one heading. It just stops being your problem and becomes ours, written down once in code instead of relearned by every person who needs it.

03 · What we will not do

Three things we turn down

  • 01

    Tools that need a tutorial

A tutorial is an admission. It says the difficulty survived the design intact and was handed to the person least equipped to carry it. We would rather keep working than write a page explaining where we put it.

  • 02

    Products we would not maintain

Anything we launch, we intend to keep running. If we would not commit to the upkeep, we do not start. A tool that quietly stops working is worse than one that never existed, because someone has arranged their work around it.

  • 03

Revenue that depends on your data

We do not sell what we learn about the people who use our products, and we do not fund them with advertising. Both require collecting more data than a product needs, and that shows up in every decision that follows. We would rather be paid for the product.

Everything above is one sentence.

We make specialized work simple. The rest of this page is an account of what it costs to keep that sentence true.
